This course trains Canadian counsellors and healthcare professionals in advanced clinical assessment using validated screening instruments (AUDIT, ASSIST, CAGE-AID, DUDIT, CRAFFT), structured interviews, psychometric interpretation, trauma- and culturally‑informed approaches, risk and diagnostic differentiation, and brief motivational techniques. Participants will leave able to select, administer, score and interpret tools, document findings, and develop evidence‑based referral and intervention plans.

What you'll learn

Select and justify validated screening instruments (AUDIT, ASSIST, CAGE-AID, DUDIT, CRAFFT) for different Canadian settings and populations.
Accurately administer, score and interpret screening tools and integrate results into risk assessment and differential diagnosis.
Apply trauma- and culturally‑informed approaches, document findings according to Canadian legal/ethical standards, and develop evidence-based referral and brief intervention plans.

Requirements

  • Foundational knowledge of substance use disorders and prior introductory training in screening or SBIRT fundamentals.
  • Active registration as a Canadian healthcare or counselling professional, or supervised practice access; private workspace for practice exercises.
