What you'll learn

Define compulsive, problem and pathological gambling and distinguish diagnostic frameworks (DSM‑5/ICD and commonly used screening tools).
Summarize recent Canadian epidemiology and patterns of gambling by province, age and gender and identify emerging trends (e.g., online gambling).
Administer, score and interpret the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and compare it with other tools used in Canada (CPGI, SOGS‑RA).
Recognize family-of-origin, intergenerational and cultural influences (including Indigenous and immigrant contexts) and apply trauma-informed, culturally safe approaches.

Describe core cognitive‑behavioural therapy (CBT) elements for gambling disorder and practice key CBT skills (urge management, cognitive restructuring, relapse prevention).
Use motivational interviewing and brief interventions to engage people in care and make evidence-informed decisions about when to refer.
Explain the role, strengths and limitations of 12‑step/peer supports (e.g., Gamblers Anonymous) and how to integrate them with clinical treatment.
Apply harm-reduction principles and the Canadian Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines to individualized treatment and safety planning.
Identify provincial/territorial resources, helplines and pathways for referral in Canada and develop a simple local referral plan.

Requirements

  • No prior clinical certification required; recommended basic familiarity with mental health/addictions concepts.
  • Approximately 3 hours of uninterrupted time and a device with internet access and PDF reader (course handouts include SOGS/CPGI scoring sheets).
  • Willingness to engage in short practical exercises, case scoring and reflective activities.
  • Access to local/provincial resource lists (learners will be guided how to locate these during the course).
