This course equips Canadian counsellors and healthcare professionals with trauma‑informed, gender‑affirming and harm‑reduction approaches for working with LGBTQ2S+ clients with substance use concerns. Participants learn inclusive assessment, culturally and legally informed care planning, crisis and diversion strategies, and practical skills for creating safer, affirming treatment environments and targeted referral networks—resulting in improved engagement, retention and client outcomes.

What you'll learn

Apply trauma‑informed, gender‑affirming and harm‑reduction approaches to assessment and brief intervention with LGBTQ2S+ clients who use substances in Canadian settings.
Navigate legal, ethical and confidentiality considerations across Canadian jurisdictions (including mature minor doctrine, limits to confidentiality and mandatory reporting) and integrate culturally safe practices.
Design and implement low‑barrier care plans, crisis/diversion pathways and targeted referral networks (including peer navigation and inclusive shelters/safe consumption options) to improve engagement and retention.

Requirements

  • Professional background in counselling, social work, nursing, primary care, addiction services or allied health.
  • Recommended: basic familiarity with substance use screening and introductory 2SLGBTQ+ training (e.g., Rainbow Health Ontario 2SLGBTQ+ Foundations or equivalent).
